Youth Conference

This year, IVROP’s - "The Choice is Mine" was a huge success. Over 200 students joined us in attendance on May 22, at San Diego State University - Imperial Valley Campus in Calexico, California. With over a dozen workshops to have chosen from and witty topics ranging from Goal Digger (goal setting) to What Not to Wear (work fashion for guys and girls) it;s no wonder that we had such a great turnout.

Renowned keynote speaker gabe Salazar joined us all the way from Houston, Texas, that morning to start things off with a message that was a motivational as it was entertaining. Sharing personal experiences, comedic skits, and real-life situations he caught our attention in ways that were both relevant and inspiring. Gabe has spoken with teens across the U.S. in an effort to challenge youth into making positive lifestyle choices and helps parents understand the pressures that today’s youth faces.

The afternoon activities were definitely a hit as groups of students teamed up and competed in relay style races and obstacle courses. Some were messy and some were a challenge, but all were certainly fun. Our raffle prizes also proved to be a success as students grasped their tickets in hopes of hearing their winning number called for prizes like gift cards, a Blu-Ray DVD player, and the grand prize - a laptop computer.

The day ended as scheduled and studnets returned to their buses and headed home. Everyone who attended even received a customized Project My Future matters/ Project SOBRIO USB flash drive, complete with every workshop presented that day.

Of course, we would like to thank all of the students, parents, and local organizations as well as our leadership group who helped make all of this possible. We also hope that everyone had as great of a time as we did.
